Some lives are so full, so rich in purpose and contribution, that they leave a lasting imprint on everyone they touch. Our much-valued client, the late Dr Jack Woolridge, lived one of those lives.
Many in our community knew Jack as a highly respected cardiologist, a pioneer in his field, and a man deeply committed to his patients. Others knew him through his passion for thoroughbred horses, or simply as a warm, humble gentleman with a great story to tell. What fewer people may know is just how remarkable that story truly was.
Jack’s journey began in unlikely fashion. As a young boy, he was a truant for almost a year. Yet at age nine he sat for the Qualifying Certificate and topped the state — an achievement that opened the door to Sydney Boys High School. There he excelled in sport as an athlete, cricketer and rugby player, dreaming of a future in sport.
History, however, had other plans. With World War II still raging, Jack enlisted in the RAAF as soon as he turned 18, serving as a pilot in New Guinea and New Britain. After the war, he redirected his discipline and determination into medicine, studying at the University of Sydney and graduating with honours.
From there followed an extraordinary medical career. Jack became a prominent cardiologist during the pioneering era of cardiology and echocardiography, contributing to advances that helped shape modern cardiac care. He worked for decades with dedication, skill and compassion, earning the respect of colleagues and the gratitude of countless patients.
Alongside his medical career, Jack built another legacy — the Inverness Thoroughbred Horse Stud. His keen eye and passion for racing led to many successful racehorses and deep involvement in the racing world.
To his wife Sue and their family, Jack was, above all, a devoted husband, father and grandfather. During the pandemic, Sue began writing down Jack’s life story for their grandchildren. What started as a family project grew into something bigger. The result is her book, Just Jack — a heartfelt tribute and a celebration of a man who, in her words, “lived a thousand lives in one.”
We feel privileged to have known Jack as a client and as a member of our wider community. His life is a reminder that it’s never too late to change direction, that resilience and curiosity can take you far, and that a meaningful life is measured not just in achievements, but in impact.
Jack’s story continues to inspire, and we are honoured to help share it.
If Jack’s story resonates with you, Sue’s book Just Jack is available to purchase locally at The Best Little Bookshop in Town, Cronulla. Supporting the book is a wonderful way to celebrate a remarkable life and preserve his story for future generations.
