ATO Crackdown on Lodgements and Tax Debt

The ATO is stepping up its efforts to make sure everyone lodges their tax documents on time and pays any outstanding debts.

Lodgements:

Tax returns, BAS and other lodgements are a legal requirement. Late lodgements can lead to penalties and serious enforcement actions. If you receive a notice, such as a 'Final Notice to Lodge', it must be taken seriously — ignoring it could result in fines or in extreme cases, criminal penalties.

Tax Debt:

If you owe tax, the ATO will first send reminders through letters, SMS, or myGov. Ignoring these can lead to the debt being sent to collection agencies, daily interest charges, and legal action such as garnishee notices or director penalties.

The ATO offers support, but failure to act can result in significant penalties and legal consequences.
